O Come , O Come Emmanuel, Word, Wisdom, and Way of Life
(A 21st century revision of a 7th century chant.)
Advent: O Come, O come Emmanuel, wisdom, word, and way of life.
O God-be-with-us, be closer to us than our own breath. Be more vital to us than the beating of our own hearts. Be the realm and rule in which we live. Salvage our scattered lives from the fields of daily diffusion.
O Wisdom, Come and teach us the way of prudence.
O perfect wisdom, you are the mystery and the meaning that shapes all things. You are the architect of time and space. You are the birther of love and its precepts. You bring order to our chaos. You bring shape to our lives. Come, infuse our souls with the principles of your creation. Weave us into your wisdom’s web.
O Adonai, Leader of the house of Israel, Come and redeem us with your outstretched arm.
O pillar of fire, O unquenchable flame, you inscribe the law of your love onto our stony hearts and inflame us with hope for a higher way. You guide us with your precepts. You refine us through our trials. You enlighten our path. Come, lead us now. Stretch out your mighty arm and lead us through our wilderness. Be our light and our path. And let your justice be our joy.
O Root of Jesse, Come now and set us free.
O tree of life, O source of generations, your name is inscribed upon our hearts. When earthly dominions rise to engulf us, your sweet and powerful spirit releases their hold. When cultural forces bend our thinking, you claim us as your own. Free us from our misconceptions. Save us from our false devotions. Calm the fears that threaten our beliefs. Help us find freedom in the lineage of your love.
O Key of David and Ruler of the house of Israel, Come and lead us out of captivity.
O, key to mystery, you alone can open our souls. We are trapped by our choices, our circumstances, our limited minds. We blithely shackle ourselves with the weights of our world and the chains of our own choosing - and then cry out for deliverance. We sit in the prisons of our own design and look for someone to save us. Only you offer us true freedom. When you open a door, it remains open forever. When you close a door, it remains closed. O shut the gate to the hell of our own making. Stem the dark draining of our souls . Save us! We pray. O save us now!
O Morning star, Come and enlighten those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death
O first and final light, you guide us through our darkest days. Comfort those who quiver at the specter of their own death and do not allow themselves to live. Assure us that your light is best perceived while braving our darkness - that only through death’s dark doorway we may pass on to eternal life.
Ruler of the nations, come and rescue the creatures you fashioned out of clay.
O Source and sovereign of all Creation, in you all life is one. Save us from the division of nations. Rescueऀ us from the delusions of war. Show us our sameness. Expose our common bond. Birth your word within us, O God-with-us. Let it call across the boundaries of tribe and turbulence to bind us into one large and loving family.
